The tube can be attached to the manifold while it cools. Meanwhile, the system pumps down to the lowest possible pressure. The tube is then filled with one or more noble gases. The gas fill pressure is approximately 1/100th the atmospheric pressure. The tube's diameter and gas used will determine the required pressure. For a 20 mm long tube filled with argon/mercury, the optimal value is 6 Torr (0.8 KPa), while for a tube of 8 mm diameter filled with pure neon, the ideal value is 27 Torr (3.6 kPa). The most commonly used gases are neon and argon. However, artists use krypton, mercury, and helium for other purposes. When a tube will be installed in cold environments, a premixed mixture of argon or helium can be used instead of pure argon. The helium increases the voltage drop and power dissipation, which in turn warms the tube faster. When lit, neon glows brightly red or reddish-orange.
